OUR STORY

Inspired by beer we found travelling overseas, Southpaw brings flavour home. We blend this with local, fresh ingredients and share this inspiration in New Zealand with our unique beers. We came together with this idea in mind when we brewed our first beer in 2016

2016 - UNCLE CHARLIE WAS BORN

Our flagship beer and first-ever commercially brewed release, Uncle Charlie – American Pale Ale, was first brewed in July 2016. It remains one of our most popular and best-selling beers to this day. 

2017 - EXPANDING THE ROSTER

Since then, we’ve grown steadily, introducing new beers both seasonally and as part of our core lineup, which we launched in a 500ml bottle range—always staying true to our values of integrity and passion with every brew. Our dedication has been recognized with multiple awards at the Brewers’ Guild NZ Beer Awards, including a gold medal for our Red IPA, Riding Pine.

2019 – A NEW BEGINNING: BREWERY & REBRAND

In 2019, we took a big step forward by investing in our own 1200L brewery. With greater flexibility and increased output, more people could enjoy the beer we love to make. It also felt like the right time to reinvent ourselves—with a fresh new look that captured our renewed energy and passion.

 2025 - BRINGING FLAVOUR HOME 

We're finally bringing flavour home to New Brighton with our new brewery taproom & cellar door—a dream we've had since the beginning of the Southpaw journey. But this is just the start of our next chapter—stay tuned for what's next!
